Washington Post Forum to Focus on 3rd Grade Reading

Date:

Three years have passed since the release of  Early Warning! Why Reading by the End of Third Grade Matters and the launch of the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading. Since then, more than 30 states have put a stake in the ground on this critical milestone.

Recognizing this, governors and chief state school officers will speak at a Washington Post Live forum on state policy and grade-level reading on Tuesday, June 4. The Reading Milestones: States Target 3rd Grade Literacy event – co-sponsored by The Annie E. Casey Foundation, the GLR Campaign and the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation in Arkansas – will explore policy options such as early identification and intervention for struggling readers and third grade retention. If you can’t be in Washington, D.C., the forum can be viewed on live stream starting at 9 a.m. ET here.

The current line up of speakers includes:

  • Delaware Gov. Jack Markell
  • Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant
  • New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez
  • Georgia State Superintendent of Schools John Barge
  • Maryland State Superintendent Lillian Lowery
  • Ohio State Superintendent of Public Instruction Richard Ross
