Parents are their children’s first teacher, brain builder, tech navigator, advocate and coach. They are the secret sauce to their children’s success. |
Parents* play the most powerful and influential role in their children’s lives. As their children’s first teacher, brain builder, tech navigator, advocate and coach, parents set the stage for success in the early years and early grades. The Campaign for Grade-Level Reading recognizes that parents are the secret sauce and that is why we have placed a big bet on parents’ central role in closing the gaps in children’s healthy development and readiness for school, school attendance, summer learning and ultimately grade-level reading proficiency.
The approach the GLR Campaign is taking with parents is one that leads with what parents want for their own children — their dreams, hopes and aspirations. We must help them in envisioning bold goals for their children, support them in achieving these goals and then join them in marking progress and celebrating success.
GLR’s Successful Parents Initiatives
The GLR Campaign has set out to make this approach real and tangible across its four Successful Parents Initiatives, which address the following challenges: 1) ensuring parents have the support, tools and information they need to support their children’s early development; 2) strengthening the relationship between parents and providers/teachers; 3) leveraging technology to help us reach and equip vast numbers of parents; and 4) changing the narrative about low-income parents from one of ambivalence, blame and judgment to one that embraces parents as co-producers of good outcomes for their children. Each initiative is described in more detail as you click on the icons below.
