Join us for a Convening on the Health Determinants of Early School Success on November 17 in Washington, D.C. At the convening, co-sponsored by the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading, 100 local and national funders will join together with program partners, health and education experts, and policy advocates to focus on the health determinants and to understand the role that Medicaid can play in addressing them.
Throughout the day, thought-provoking presentations and peer-learning discussions with philanthropic and government leaders and experts in policy and practice will:
- Make the case for the health determinants of early school success
- Make the case for the role of Medicaid to expand coverage and quality of care for low-income children
- Raise up promising practices and financing strategies leveraging Medicaid
You will leave with a clear sense of the importance of the health determinants of early school success, lessons learned from engagement with state Medicaid agencies and Managed Care Organizations, and a set of actionable, achievable next steps to deepen the impact of early literacy work in your community and state.
The draft agenda is available here.
Healthy development from birth onward greatly affects children’s ability to learn: Children who are on track in their physical and social and emotional development are more successful learners from their earliest years and more likely to become proficient readers. This is why the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading promotes the important connections between health and learning — which it calls “the health determinants of early school success” — on two fronts: working to broaden public awareness and understanding, and encouraging GLR communities nationwide to move from talk to action.
